Intarsia is the ancient art of making decorative and pictorial mosaics by cutting and laying various pieces of wood, both local and exotic, onto a solid background of wood. It dates back to ancient times in Egypt, Japan, Imperial Rome, Persia, and fifteenth and sixteenth century Italy and Germany.

Intarsia is sealed with a clear finish, rather than any paints or stain.
